The first step to becoming an individual volunteer is to submit an application to your preferred position. Please note there are a few requirements before you join our volunteer team.

  • Must be 18 years old or older
  • Must be available for 4 hour shifts weekly or bi-weekly
Our Volunteer Positions

Family Room Volunteer

Reports to: Family Room Manager

Requirements: Must be 21 years or older; must commit to one shift per week or biweekly.

Shifts: Monday – Friday – 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m., Saturday – Sunday – 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Your commitment to a time slot or substitute time slots is essential to smooth delivery of services for our families.

Overview: Provides an oasis and displays excellent customer service for families of inpatient patients in order to provide a break from the hospital environment without leaving the hospital. These volunteers will ensure that the space is always clean, friendly, comfortable, and inviting.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist guests with various requests and needs in a supportive and friendly manner.
  • Register families using our Family Registry database.
  • Check families in and out of sleep rooms.
  • Provide tours for first-time guests and provide them with the Expectations and Guidelines.
  • Clean and organize common areas throughout the Family Room to ensure a proper and professional appearance of the facility and spaces within the Ronald McDonald Family Room at all times. This requires the position to perform light, manual labor to meet this expectation.
  • Coordinate with MU Healthcare the cleaning of the sleep rooms to ensure they are ready for the next family each day.
  • Volunteers are expected to demonstrate compassion and be good listeners.

Requirements

  • Be dependable, flexible, and highly sensitive to and supportive of the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated organization, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to accept direction and work in both a flexible, team-oriented environment, as well as independently
  • Complete a background check
  • Attend a hospital and an RMHC orientation session and family room training
  • Up to date on immunizations and a current flu shot
  • The ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Must maintain discretion regarding confidentiality and privacy
  • Commit to a regular weekly schedule
  • Must be comfortable enforcing the rules of the Family Room when necessary

FRONT DESK VOLUNTEER

Reports to: House Manager

Requirements: Must be 18 years or older; must commit to two shifts a month or once a week.

Shifts: Monday – Sunday – 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Your commitment to a time slot or substitute time slots is essential to smooth delivery of services for our families.

Overview: Front Desk Volunteers welcome and assist families and answers inquiries from families, visitors, and callers, and provide shuttle rides to families.

Essential Functions:

  • Answer the door and greet guests.
  • Respond to inquiries as appropriate; provide information to callers, visitors, and families.
  • Stay informed of pertinent House information.
  • Accept and document deliveries and donations.
  • Shuttle families to and from surrounding medical facilities.
  • Work alongside Guest Relations Staff to assist guests with various requests and needs in a supportive and friendly manner.

Requirements

  • Be dependable, flexible, and highly sensitive to and supportive of the mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to relate to people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated organization, problem-solving and decision-making skills with the ability to accept direction and work in both a flexible, team-oriented environment, as well as independently.
  • Complete a background check
  • Valid driving license (verbiage needed for shuttle)
  • Complete RMH volunteer training orientation
  • The ability to lift 25 pounds
  • Must maintain discretion regarding confidentiality and privacy
  • Commit to a regular weekly schedule
  • Must be comfortable enforcing the rules of the House when necessary

HOUSE VOLUNTEER

Reports to: House Manager

Requirements: Must be 18 years or older; must commit to a minimum of two shifts a month or once a week

Shifts: Monday – Sunday – 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 a.m., 12:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Your commitment to a time slot or substitute time slots is essential to smooth delivery of services for our families.

Overview: House Volunteers welcome and assist families and answers inquiries from families, visitors, and callers, and provide shuttle rides to families.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide tours to families to familiarize them with the RMH.
  • Assist guests with various requests and needs in a supportive and friendly manner.
  • Clean and organize guest rooms and common areas throughout the House to always ensure a proper and professional appearance of the facility and spaces within the RMH. This requires the position to perform light, manual labor to meet this expectation.
    • Clean guest rooms in preparation for arriving families.
    • Clean common areas including TV rooms, bathrooms, lobby, and kitchen/dining areas.
    • Wash dishes.
    • Stock and maintain supplies.
    • Complete House laundry as needed, including washing, drying, and folding linens and towels.
  • Respond to inquiries as appropriate; provide information to callers, visitors, and families.
  • Stay informed of pertinent House information.
  • Accept and document deliveries and donations.
  • Shuttle families to and from surrounding medical facilities.
